What is a scapular winging ?
The medical term for bladebone is scapula. If this bladebone is sticking out, some people call it alar scapula or winging scapula. Alar is a latin term, which means "wing". A winging scapula or scapula is a bladebone sticking out. The winging scapula has to be distinguished from a painful scapular cracking. Suffering from a painful scapular cracking, the patient feels pain, but the scapula is not winging, it is not sticking out.
What is causing a winging of the bladebone ?
A winging scapula occurs abruptly and spontaneously - without any cause. Family members or friends recognize the sticking out scapula, normally. Rarely there are a few diseases underlying this winging scapula, which have to be ruled out by a diagnostic. This nasty diseases are tumors of the scapula or tumors of the chest wall, muscular dystrophy as well as nerve palsies. Even infectious diseases might cause a scapular winging.
What do I feel suffering from a winging of the bladebone ?
The scapular winging / sticking out - with moderate or no pain is the typical sign. Performing push ups is not necessary or definite impaired.
How to treat a scapular winging ?
If severe diseases are excluded a winging scapula will be observed. As a rule no special therapy is necessary, but it has to be observed by a physician. Even if the serratus muscle is paralyzed an eye will be kept on the situation. A special bandage might relief complaints, if present. A tumor has to be staged and removed by an operation. In patients with a first diagnosis of a muscular dystrophy a neurologists has to be consulted. If a nerve is damaged by compression ( e.g. a rucksack ) the rate a spontaneous healing is high.
